FIRE EXTINGUISHERS…Get to Know Your A, B, Cs
In the event that there is a fire while you are at work, you must be prepared to assist in putting it out. However, using the wrong fire extinguisher can result in more damage than the fire itself. All extinguishers have nameplates identifying their usage instructions, as outlined below.
Class A Fires
o These fires include wood, paper, trash and other items that produce glowing embers as they burn.
o Only use a Class A extinguisher for these items and never use one on a gas or electrical fire.
Class B Fires
o These include flammable liquid and gas fires (gasoline, paint thinners, solvents, grease and acetylene).
o Use a Class B extinguisher only to fight these fires.
Class C Fires
o These include energized electrical equipment fires.
o Use a Class C extinguisher only to fight these fires.
There are also extinguishers which can be used for all types of fires known as a Class ABC extinguisher. It is wise to keep one on hand, both at work and in various places around your home.
It’s easy to remember how to use a fire extinguisher, just P.A.S.S.!
P- Pull the pin straight out with the fire extinguisher on the floor.
A- Aim 10 feet back from the base of the fire.
S- Squeeze the lever on the fire extinguisher.
S- Sweep from side to side until the fire is out.
